Song information

“Moonlight Shadow”, initially entitled “Midnight Passion”, was written and recorded by Mike Oldfield with vocals by Maggie Reilly. The piece performed very well in European and Australian charts, becoming Oldfield's most successful single to date. Lyrics tell the story of a man who gets shot by a “man on the run” and, as such, are often read as a metaphor for John Lennon's death. In fact, the numbers of shots and the hours don't match: Mark David Chapman fired at Lennon five times at 10:50 pm while the gunman in the song shot six times at “4 am in the morning”. Twelve years after the single's release Oldfield explained that he was indeed concerned with Lennon's tragedy, but his source of inspiration was different.
